Antigone

This project is based on the research I conducted for my thesis on ‘IM’ (a young adult magazine published between 1965 and 2015 in Hungary). I examined the changes in the reading habits of young adults and how digital innovations affected them. Young people today tend to think more visually, in a less linear way, and consume shorter texts. This trend was exacerbated by the widespread use of the internet in most families. The everyday use of social media among teenagers led me to experiment with publishing a book on Instagram.

I chose Antigone because the older the text, the harder it is for young adults to understand. My intention was to make it easier for them to process the story by dividing it into shorter sections. I found the Instagram carousel format the perfect medium for this.

To make these posts more engaging I mixed typefaces and illustrated the text with an icon font and geometric forms. I took the paintings of Kasimir Malevits as inspiration for these.

For each character I used a different typeface that resembled their character. For the two main character I used Rader, a bold and strong font which suits the two most stubborn charachter. For Ismene I paired a more subtle and feminine one. And for Heimon I used something more general less characteristic font.
